Background of the Study
Community-based organizations (CBOs) have emerged as vital agents of local economic development in Nigeria. Operating at the grassroots level, these organizations mobilize local resources, foster community engagement, and implement development initiatives tailored to specific local needs (Ifeanyi, 2023). CBOs include cooperatives, local business associations, and non-governmental organizations that work to enhance social and economic empowerment. Their role is particularly significant in regions where governmental support is limited, enabling communities to address local challenges through collective action (Adesola, 2024).
Recent research indicates that successful CBOs contribute to capacity building, skills development, and local entrepreneurship. When effectively managed, these organizations can improve local infrastructure, generate employment opportunities, and promote sustainable business practices that resonate with community values (Chisom, 2025). Additionally, CBOs often serve as advocates for local interests, influencing policy decisions and ensuring that development projects align with community needs. Their decentralized nature allows for rapid response to local challenges, making them indispensable during periods of economic uncertainty (Uche, 2023).
The integration of CBOs into local economic development strategies represents a shift toward inclusive and participatory development models. By leveraging indigenous knowledge and fostering community solidarity, CBOs help create resilient local economies that are less reliant on external funding. This study investigates the multifaceted impact of community-based organizations on local economic development in Nigeria, exploring the opportunities they create and the challenges they face in a dynamic economic landscape.
Statement of the Problem
Despite their recognized contributions, community-based organizations in Nigeria face significant challenges that limit their effectiveness. Many CBOs struggle with limited access to capital, inadequate technical expertise, and weak organizational structures, hindering their ability to implement large-scale development projects (Eze, 2023). Furthermore, a lack of coordination between CBOs and government agencies often results in duplication of efforts and inefficient resource use. Without a robust support framework, many community-driven initiatives fail to scale or sustain their impact.
Internal governance issues, including lack of accountability and leadership conflicts, further undermine the credibility and operational efficiency of some CBOs (Okoro, 2024). External challenges such as political instability and regional disparities also disrupt local development efforts, complicating the environment in which CBOs operate. Additionally, insufficient data on the performance and impact of CBOs makes it difficult to assess their contributions accurately. Addressing these barriers is essential for fully harnessing the potential of community-based organizations in driving local economic development.
